Volunteer Associate Judge

Role Description and Responsibilities

Associate (or trainee) judges are an integral part of the judging panel and essential to the development of future Full Judges.

As the Australian beer community continues to grow and evolve, more judges will be needed to ensure there is an even and fair representation across the competitions. By taking the opportunity to participate as an Associate Judge, applicants can further learn about the industry, the judging process, and continue to grow their own understanding of flavours, faults, techniques, etc.

An Associate is the first and most important step in the pathway to becoming a Full Judge, providing training on how to link sensory insights to constructing an appropriate score.

The role of the Associate Judge is to:
  • Evaluate beer samples using predetermined criteria to accurately assess flavor, aroma, body, and other characteristics;
  • Document tasting results in a comprehensive and consistent manner;
  • Discuss their perceptions and sensory findings with the panel of judges;
  • Provide feedback for entrants on the style and quality of the beer being judged;
  • Have a basic understanding of flavours, faults and how brewing/packaging processes can affect these;
  • Judge each beer on its merit according to the supplied style guidelines with fairness and without bias;
  • Treat each sample as an award-winning beer unless otherwise determined by the panel after tasting;
  • Ask questions of the other judges at the table to continue to learn and understand.
