The Independent Brewers Association Constitution defines an Independent Brewer as any brewery based in Australia:

  • which has aggregate beer sales <40M litres per calendar year;
  • in which a brewer with aggregate beer sales of 40M+ litres per calendar year does not own more than a 20 per cent share; or
  • which does not itself hold more than a 20 per cent share in the brewery with aggregate beer sales of 40M + litres per calendar year.

Independent Brewers are entitled to a full membership, which includes all the IBA's membership benefits.

Help steer the future of the Australian independent brewing industry.

Driven by our member's needs, we form strategies to address issues that affect you and your business.

Our current efforts include:

  • Petitioning the Federal Government to increase the alcohol excise rebate from $100,000 to $350,000 and waive excise debt accrued during COVID-19.
  • Advocating to the Federal Government to create Beer Australia, a national strategy and underpinning funding program to support the independent brewing industry.
  • Worked alongside the Queensland and NSW government to form bespoke Craft Beer Strategies.
  • Working with our alcohol industry partners to realise a sensible solution to mandatory pregnancy labelling imposed by Food Standards Australia New Zealand.
  •   Prompting the ACCC to investigate tap contracts between venues and multinational brewers.
  • Working with national, state and territory tourism organisations to recognise tap rooms and brewpubs as unique and valuable visitors experiences.

Last year we launched a series of state and national events and networking activities for the industry.

These activities are designed to be a relaxed offering where we share a beer, some nibbles and a brief presentation provided by a partner member as well as an update from out team.

The series was open to all within the brewing, local produce, supply chain and hospitality industry.

To date the IBA has  delivered twelve B2B ‘Mash Up’ events across Australia and although the global pandemic has changed the way we roll, we are still offering these meet ups - just in a virtual way!
